The Independence Police Department was formally established in 1882, evolving from the town marshal system that had served the city since its incorporation. The original force consisted of a City Marshal and a handful of night watchmen who patrolled the streets of Independence on foot and horseback.
The post-war era through the 21st century saw tremendous growth. The department achieved CALEA accreditation, established specialized units including SWAT, K-9, and Community Policing, and moved into a state-of-the-art headquarters facility at 223 N Memorial Drive.
Today, IPD is a full-service law enforcement agency with over 230 sworn officers serving 117,000 residents. The department embraces technology-driven policing, community engagement, and continuous improvement to meet the evolving needs of Independence.
