History of the IPD

From a frontier town marshal to a modern law enforcement agency—140+ years of service.

1882

The Founding

The Independence Police Department was formally established in 1882, evolving from the town marshal system that had served the city since its incorporation. The original force consisted of a City Marshal and a handful of night watchmen who patrolled the streets of Independence on foot and horseback.

Early 1900s

Growth & Modernization

As Independence grew, so did the department. The early 20th century brought the first automobiles to the department's fleet, the establishment of formal detective operations, and the introduction of professional standards and training requirements for all officers.

Modern Era

Expansion & Accreditation

The post-war era through the 21st century saw tremendous growth. The department achieved CALEA accreditation, established specialized units including SWAT, K-9, and Community Policing, and moved into a state-of-the-art headquarters facility at 223 N Memorial Drive.

Today
